Explosion kills five soldiers

Five soldiers were killed and ten were wounded in an explosion while they were on a patrol in a remote
region of central Colombia, local media reported on Friday.

The
explosion apparently was caused by a booby trap triggered by the soldiers as
they were searching for a cache of guerrilla weapons in central Meta department,
a radio station said.

The soldiers belong to the army’s elite Omega
unit tasked with tracking the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia
(FARC) rebel group.
