Explosion at Medellín airport leaves eight wounded

by Jonathan Roorda February 18, 2009

An explosion at Medellín’s Enrique Olaya Herrera airport left eight
people wounded. The incident took place in an airplane that was
scheduled to transport a number of police units to Chocó.

The airplane, a DC-3, had arrived from Bogotá to pick up 27 members of Colombia’s special forces, when the explosion took place. As a result, the aircraft broke into two pieces.

Reportedly, four of the eight officials that were wounded suffered considerable injuries.

Although authorities assume that it concerns some sort of accident, they did order anti-explosive units to investigate the location.

Olaya Herrera was formerly the main international airport of Medellín but lost much of its importance with the construction of José Maria Córdova International Airport miles east of the city.
