Ex-prosecution official convicted for corruption

The former director of the investigation unit of Colombia’s Prosecutor General’s Office was found guilty Monday of influence peddling and embezzlement.

A Colombian judge placed Marilu Mendez under house arrest for “presenting businesses Fares SAS and Idrogo Associates, owned by her ex-husband, for training security forces themselves [and] inferring in the decision of the director of Fondelibertad, Harlan Henao, [in the] signing [of] contracts which led to an equity benefit.”

The judge explained that if it was Mendez’s interest to collaborate with Fondelibertad and with the army, that collaboration should have been made with the proper authorities and not recommended to third parties and individuals.

Mendez was accused of embezzling $1,500 meant for transportation and per diem expenses of her employees who worked for her husband without orders from any public office; however, all that money has been repaid by the former officials, according to Caracol Radio.
