Ex-paramilitary boss sentenced to 40 years for massacre

Notorious ex-paramilitary boss Rodrigo Mercado Peluffo, alias ‘Cadena’, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after being found guilty of commanding the Massacre of Macayepo in northern Colombia in 2000.

‘Cadena’ was sentenced by a judge from the Specialized Circuit of Cartagena following declarations made by a human rights prosecutor and the International Humantiarian Law department.

The declarations confirmed Peluffo as the leader of the paramilitary bloc ‘Heroes of the Mountains of Maria’ and condemned him to 40 years for the crime of aggravated multiple homicide, reported the Prosecutor Generals Office on Thursday.

On 14 October 2000, members from this illegal paramilitary faction went into the town of Macayepo, in the Colombian department of Bolivar, and butchered 15 inhabitants with stones and clubs.
