Ex-governor convicted of paramilitary ties

Colombia’s Supreme Court on Tuesday convicted former Magdalena governor, Jose Domingo Davila Armenta, for dealings with paramilitaries.

The former governor of the northern Colombian department of Magdalena was sentenced to 90 months in jail and fined nearly $2 million for his ties to the Tairona bloc of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) that operated in the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, reports W Radio.

The court’s Criminal Chamber also ordered that Davila Armenta be investigated for human rights abuses.

The former politician denied his involvement in the Chivolo pact between paramilitaries and politicians in Magdalena and denied that the AUC supported his campaign for governor in 2001.

He also denied any links with Hernan Giraldo Serna alias “El Patron,” the ex-commander of the “Resistencia Tairona” bloc of the AUC who is currently incarcerated in the United States.
