Ex-FARC guerrilla’s future in limbo

Five months after ex-guerrilla ‘Miryam’ fled the FARC and demobilized, officials are still unsure of how to process her. While the Prosecutor General has filed no charges against her, the Inspector General is reluctant to close the case.

‘Miryam’ received 100 million pesos for voluntarily deserting the FARC. She is expected to use the money to start a new life in another country.

The ex-guerrilla claims that she was forced to join the FARC but the Prosecutor General is not convinced and believes she may have signed up for the
guerrilla movement by choice.

The Prosecutor General said that “although we acknowledge that the rebel regained a hostage’s freedom and saved his life, we emphasize that her claims must be investigated in more depth and with more rigor”.

‘Miryam’ escaped her guerrilla camp along with a hostage in the hope of receiving the same treatment and reward as former guerrilla ‘Isaza’, who was compensated for demobilizing and now lives in France.
