Ex-DAS director’s evidence may compromise govt members

Former DAS official Rafael Garcia, who last year accused the security agency of spying on the Venezuelan government, has announced that he will co-operate in the justice procedures of “a foreign country,” potentially incriminating members of the Colombian government, reported Caracol radio on Monday.

In a letter to Colombia’s Supreme Court, Garcia states that his decision to work with the justice system of another country, which has not yet been specified, means that he will be providing foreign courts with potentially compromising information about Colombian officials and members of the government.

The ex-DAS official has received several death threats due to this decision.

Garcia’s lawyer told the Supreme Court that this “collaboration, which might compromise current and former officials of the DAS and other agencies of the Colombian government, is possibly the cause of the dirty war to which my client has been subjected by supposed anonymous sources and state intelligence sources that have been cited by national media in what seems to be a campaign to discredit my client.”

Garcia’s decision has also rendered him unable to act as a witness in the case against ex-DAS director Jorge Noguera, who is currently facing trial for suspected illegal activities undertaken by the scandal-hit security agency.
