The mayor of Barranquilla on Wednesday declared a state of emergency in five areas of the city due to heavy rains during this prolonged winter season, Caracol Radio reported on Wednesday.

By declaring a state of emergency Baranquilla will be able to mitigate the effects of this year’s rainy season more successfully, explained Mayor, Alejandor Char Chaljub.

Chaljub added that “we have 5 billion pesos, the District’s own resources, to undertake the work that is urgently need.”

With an investment of an extra 2,700 million pesos Baranquilla will be able to carry out reconstruction and offer humanitarian aid.

The areas most affected by the rain are Campo Alegre, El Bosque, Villa del Rosario, Cuchilla de Villate and La Esmeralda.
