Colombian newspaper El Tiempo tops the list of Colombia’s most followed news outlet on social networking site Twitter with over 100,000 followers.

“We are very proud of this achievement since we went from 2,000 followers in January of this year to the current figure. We have worked hard to become the media referred to on Twitter and Tweeters have responded. We trust we will soon get to 200,000,” said Diego Santos, director of eltiempo.com.

“Our constant interaction with Tweeters on all kinds of issues has been one of the keys,” Santos added.

El Tiempo Tweets the news stories published on its website, as well as up-to-the-minute updates on what is happening around the world.

The most popular Colombians on Twitter are Shakira with over 2 million followers, then Juanes with more than a million, race car driver JP Montoya with almost 200,000, former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe with over 130,000, and Sofia Vergara with close to 100,000.
