Ecuador increases security on border with Colombia

by Adriaan Alsema November 7, 2008

Ecuador sent extra troops to its border with Colombia to avoid
incidents with incursions of illegal armed groups. Ecuador claims
paramilitaries harassed and injured people in town close to the border
a few days ago.

According to an Ecuadorean military source quoted by Spanish press agency Efe, the countryhas sent additional troops to conduct “more rigorous checks” in the border area.

The source wouldn’t say how many soldiers have been sent to the northern border.

Ecuador accuses Colombia of not securing its border enough and Colombian illegal armed forces and drug trafficking are crossing the border, pressuring and harassing Ecuadorean civilians.
