Ecuador confirms dead minor was Colombian

colombia news - FARC camp raid

Ecuador’s Security Minister Miguel Carvajal confirms that the 12-year-old minor who died in an air raid on a FARC camp was Colombian, but was registered in 1998 as a refugee in Ecuador, reports El Universo.

Carvajal is currently attending the Commission on Sensitive Issues, a meeting of the foreign ministers of Colombia and Ecuador.

On Wednesday, the mother of the minor stated her son was born in La Victoria, Colombia, and that they later moved to Santa Barbara, Ecuador, where they obtained refugee visas.

On Tuesday, Colombia stated the minor was Colombian and not Ecuadorean as was initially reported.

The raid was carried out Monday by Colombian forces against the camp of the 48th Front of the FARC in Ipiales in Nariño, close to the Ecuadorean border. Seventeen bodies have been recovered.

Colombia’s national police, who contributed intelligence to the operation, say that the FARC camp had moved 25 tons of cocaine to central America and Europe annually.
