Ecuador boosts security on border with Colombia

Ponce told reporters that Ecuador has identified 10 points at the northern border region, where police have been stationed to prevent Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels from crossing into Ecuador.Among the 10 selected points, Puerto Mestanza, Puerto Nuevo and El Palmar are classified as critical level.Modern radars and technical systems will be used to guarantee border security, the defense minister said, while two fleets of Super Tucanos planes will be used to safeguard the airspace.The move is aimed at meeting the social and economic demands of the people living in border region, said Ponce.Ecuador broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia following the latter’s bombing raid on a FARC camp in Ecuadorian territory on March 1.
