Ecopetrol strikes oil in central Colombia

by Toni Peters May 17, 2011

Colombia News - Oil

State-run petroleum company Ecopetrol has announced a new oil discovery in the Colombian department of Meta, according to a press release published Tuesday.

The exploration oil well Mito-1, part of an exploration of the Caño Sur block, in the central department of Meta, produces 200 barrels a day with an API grade of 13.5.

In initial tests the well yielded 225 barrels of fluid a day, with a 10% cut of water and sediments resulting in an average of 200 barrels of crude oil a day. The Mito-1 well was perforated vertically to a depth of 3,310 ft.

Ecopetrol is the operator and owner of 100% of the rights of the contract to Caño Sur after purchasing Royal Dutch Shell’s 50% stake in February.

The department of Meta is the location of almost 40% of Ecopetrol’s crude oil production and is the focus of the company’s exploration campaign, with 10 exploratory wells in the Caño Sur block alone.
