Duque eliminated at Roland Garros

Mariana Duque has been eliminated from Roland Garros. The Colombian
tennis player lost to Jarmila Groth in the second round of the
prestigious French tournament.

After beating Russian Anna Cakvetadze, 27th on the world ranking, confidence should not have been an issue when Duque faced 73rd-placed Australian Jarmila Groth.

But things did not go as planned in the first set, where Groth easily cruise to a 6-2 result. In the second set, Duque improved her performance but although she broke Groth on several occasions, she was just as easily broken in return.

A tie-break was needed to decide the set and Groth, who spent much more time near the net than her opponent, eventually won that thrilling tie-break 11-9 for a 2-0 victory in sets.

The second round appearance was Duque’s second at a Grand Slam, after having reached the same stage at last year’s US Open. The Bogotá born player gets her next chance at Wimbledon in July.
