by Adriaan Alsema May 12, 2009

Colombia news - Ricaurte

Two Awa indigenous were killed and one was severely injured by alleged
members of a drug gang in the south west of Colombia, indigenous
authorities say.

According to Ricaurte mayor and member of the Awa, Abel Quiñonez, the two male victims were first stabbed and then shot to death by alleged drug traffickers in the municipality. A third victim, a woman, was seriously injured and taken to the local hospital.

The Police announced a 50 million peso (US$23 thousand) reward for information leading to the perpetrators of the double homicide.

The Nariño department in the utter south west of Colombia, is considered one of the most violent of Colombia, because of the presence of both paramilitary gangs and left wing guerrillas. The government Monday announced the relocation of 2,000 extra soldiers to the region to restore public order.
