Don Diego trial postponed

by Adriaan Alsema January 20, 2009

The trial against ‘Don Diego’, extradited to the United States and
alleged capo of the Norte del Valle cartel was postponed with 30 days
Tuesday.

‘Don Diego’ Montoya’s lawyers had asked thirty more days to prepare the trial against the alleged mafia boss. The prosecution didn’t object and the defense’s request was granted by the judge.

The former head of the Norte del Valle cartel is charged with drug trafficking, money laundering and related charges and is expected to plead guilty to be able to benefit from a plea agreement, possibly resulting in a reduction of his sentence.

The Norte del Valle cartel became Colombia’s biggest drug cartel after the death of Pablo Escobar and the dismantling of the Cali cartel.

According to National Police director Oscar Naranjo, the extradition of ‘Don Diego’ and ‘Chupeta’ and the murder of Wilber ‘Jabon’ Varela in Venezuela meant the end of the cartel.
