DMG did not fund referendum: Electoral Council

Colombia´s National Electoral Council determined that suspected money launderer DMG was not involved in the logistics of the referendum needed for the re-election of President Álvaro Uribe.

“There is no sign of illegal money being used in the presidential re-election referendum,” said Joaquin Jose Vives, the magistrate of the Electoral Council in charge of the investigation.

However, the Electoral Council added that it will not throw out the investigation regarding suspicious financing of the referendum by paramilitary organizations.

The investigation into the referendum began after money contributed to the campaign surpassed the 265 million peso legal limit at 1.9 billion pesos and the organizers were not able to explain where the money came from.
