District Attorney sacked over bribery allegations

by Katharina Wecker July 17, 2009

Colombia news - corruption in Los Llanos

An east Colombia District Attorney was sacked, allegedly because he had
received a car from ‘El Loco’ Barrera, one of Colombia’s most wanted
drug lords, El Tiempo reported Friday.

The newspaper revealed six telephone recordings in which the now retired head of the Los Llanos prosecution, German Rozo Toledo, talks to ‘Henry’, a partner of drug lord Daniel ‘El Loco’ Barrera. ‘Henry’ told Rozo that he and his ‘friend’ will give him a car for his birthday – an Aveo Emotion in grey.

The Prosecutor General initiated a process against the former director because Rozo received perks from criminals.

Rozo himself denies having ever received gifts from people under investigation or from criminals who were brought to justice. “I have never had relations with crininals. I coordinated operations against ‘El loco’,” Rozo said, adding that he has papers showing that he paid for the car.

However, the recordings of the conversations Rozo had with Henry, prove the official did arrange the purchase of the car with ‘Henry’.

The former District Attorney of Medellin, Guillermo Valencia Cossio, is also investigated for alleged ties to the mafia. he is accused of having had ties to teh organization of jailed capo ‘Don Mario.
