Deportivo Cali’s Montero could join Seattle Sounders

by Jonathan Roorda January 21, 2009

Colombian footballer Fredy Montero could well spend the 2009 season
with Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders. The forward is
currently training with the team, although a contract hasn’t been
signed up til now.

The 21-year-old played for Deportivo Cali in 2008 and scored 20 goals in 38 games. This performance attracted the interest of several clubs including Spanish side Real Betis. However, due to uncertainty about whether the player was still under contract or instead a free agent, negotiations were blocked.

Whether Cali plans to sell the player or let him play elsewhere on loan remains unknown, but Seattle Sounders expect a contract to be signed soon.

Montero, who also spent part of his career at Atlético Huila, made his national team debut for Colombia in a friendly with Panama in 2007.
