Deportes Tolima stun Banfield to advance in Copa Sudamericana

Colombian soccer team Deportes Tolima are through to the quarter finals of the Copa Sudamericana following an impressive 3-0 victory over Argentina’s Banfield.

Tolima lost the first leg 2-0 in Argentina but turned things around at their own Manuel Murillo stadium in Ibague.

Wilder Medina scored the opener for the Colombians in the 12th minute and Christian Marrugo leveled the aggregate score four minutes before half time.

A second yellow card for Yair Arrechea seemed to complicate matters for Tolima in the 59th minute but Rodrigo Marangoni netted the home side’s third 15 minutes later for a 3-2 aggregate score.

In the remainder of the match, Banfield failed to fight their way back and instead lost defender Victor Lopez to a red card in injury time.

Tolima are the first team to secure a spot in the quarter finals, in which it will face either Argentina’s Independiente or Uruguay’s Defensor Sporting.

Colombia’s other remaining team in this tournament, Santa Fe, play their first leg in the round of sixteen against Brazil’s Atletico Mineiro on Wednesday.
