Defense wants Inspector General removed from Cordoba case

by Adriaan Alsema October 2, 2010

Colombia news - Ordoñez and Cordoba

The defense attorney of dismissed Senator Piedad Cordoba on Friday asked Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez to declare himself impeded to appoint the official to take up the senator’s appeal.

According to defense attorney Ciro Quiroz, the Inspector General failed to show impartiality because Ordoñez on several occasions spoke out on the matter in the media following the ruling.

This makes it impossible for Ordoñez to impartially pick the Inspector General’s official who will review the appeal the senator plans to file against the ruling that dismisses her and bars her from public office for a period of 18 years, the attorney told Caracol Radio.

If the Inspector General does not declare himself barred from appointing the person to consider the appeal, this will be a legal argument to nullify the ruling completely, Quiroz warned.
