Colombian defense minister Juan Manuel Santos is expected to leave his
current position within the next few weeks, in order to declare his
pre-candidacy for next year’s presidential elections.
In an interview with Caracol Radio, Santos said to be discussing the matter with president Álvaro Uribe.
Asked whether the minister plans to resign any time soon, Santos said that he “doesn’t think that there will be a decision anywhere in the next two weeks”.
Nevertheless, Santos will definitely have to leave his current job before mid-March, if he wants to be allowed to run for president.
The 57-year-old politician from Bogotá, member of the ‘Partido de la U’, is considered to be one of the top candidates for the 2010 elections, if current president Uribe decides not to run.
