Lawyer resigns in Colombia’s drug agency ex-director trial

The defense lawyer for convicted ex-drug agency director Omar Figueroa has resigned, reported Radio Caracol Monday.

The report said defense lawyer Carlos Roberto Solorzano’s resignation caused Figueroa’s trial to be delayed until May 16.

Figueroa was convicted in November 2011 for the misappropriation of goods seized from drug traffickers during his time as director of Colombia’s now defunct drug agency, National Narcotics Directorate [DNE].

The imprisoned ex-director is still on trial for breach of public duty, embezzelment, forgery, trial fraud,  and conspiracy.

Last year Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos announced plans to dismantle the DNE amid accusastions of corruption.

Figueroa is one of many former DNE officials in addition to Colombian congressmen who have been implicated in the scandal.
