Dean killed while eating lunch at Cali university

The dean of economics at the University of Santiago in Cali was shot and killed by two young men Tuesday as he ate his lunch in the university cafeteria with his bodyguards, reports El Tiempo

“There were three shots, but no one reacted until the third rang out, because everyone simply thought something had fallen. It did not sound very loud, but when we realized what was happening it became a mess … the whole world shouted down, down,” said a witness at the scene.

Dean Ebert Mosquera was surrounded by bodyguards when the two men attacked, one of which was quickly taken down by one of Mosquera’s security team, while the other man allegedly fled on a motorcycle in the ensuing chaos.

“Everybody was having lunch, all was quiet, he was with the bodyguards and two boys arrived. One of them lifted his shirt and pulled a very tiny gun, like those used in video games, which have a very soft sound, and fired the first shot, but nobody reacted,” said the witness.

The murder comes amid a special security council meeting in Cali, in which government ministries, the police, the army, intelligence agency DAS, and forensic investigators are working out ways to solve the crime problem in the Valle capital which has been spiralling out of control.
