DAS thwarts FARC attacks against government officials

Colombia’s intelligence service DAS claims to have thwarted a number of
rebel attacks aimed at government officials in the east of the country.

According to the DAS, the FARC wanted to kill Arauca Governor Luis Eduardo Ataya Arias and a number of councillors, deputies and land owners from the same department.

The FARC was planning to use bombs and kidnappings to fight those in power in Colombia’s eastern department, according to documents found by the DAS.

Arauca is one of the departments where illegal armed groups are very powerful.
