DAS: Election security higher than ever before

Colombian intelligence agency DAS says that security measures for this year’s elections will be tighter than ever before, reported El Tiempo on Wednesday.

The director of DAS, Felipe Muñoz, said that the agency would be on high alert for security threats to politicians both before and after Colombia’s elections, with over 3,000 officers employed to protect both congressional and presidential candidates.

Muñoz stated that so far 27 Colombian politicians had received extra protection from the security agency.

DAS will also increase the frequency of border patrols during the elections season to prevent illegal crossings and increase the availability of bomb control units to avoid terrorist threats.

The Ministry of Defense has also heightened security measures during the country’s election period, last month announcing the employment of over 100,000 soldiers and police to stand guard at polling stations on election day.
