DAS arrests judge who released ‘El Indio’

by Adriaan Alsema July 15, 2009

Officials of Colombia’s intelligence service DAS Tuesday arrested the judge who had released ‘El Indio’, the alleged right hand man of captured drug lord Don Mario and key witness in the corruption case against former Medellin district attorney Guillermo Valencia Cossio.

The judge, who was visibly drunk when he was arrested, is the subject of nine investigations and allegedly had illegally ordered the release of other suspected criminals before he set John Fredy ‘El Indio’ Manco Torres free.

‘El Indio’, not only suspected of having played a major role in the organization of Daniel ‘Don Mario’ Rendon Herrera, was a key witness in the case againt Valencia Cossio, who is suspected of having frustrated the investigation of ‘Don Mario’s’ organization while Valencia Cossio was in charge of the Medellin prosecution Office.

Judge Luis Eduardo Beltran is personally investigated in five criminal cases. Four other criminal cases are against his Bogota courthouse. Police is also investigating the murder of Beltran’s personal assistant.
