Cuchillo after Carranza’s emerald empire

by Adriaan Alsema July 13, 2009

Colombia news - Carranza and Cuchillo

Colombian authorities suspect drug trafficker ‘El Cuchillo’ to bethe one behind the attack on the country’s ’emerald czar’ VictorCarranza.

The attack would be part of a dispute between the two about how the drug lord is completely and ruthlessly is disregarding local inhabitants and businesses in the south-eastern part of Colombia. The drug lord allegedly wants to submit the powerful emerald czar to his paramilitary rule.

According to newspaper El Espectador, authorities documented testimonies of the emerald czar documents wherein a meeting between one of Colombia’s most wanted drug lords and the country’s most controversial emerald miner is described.

In this meeting, Carranza pleaded Cuchillo respected a number of rules to avoid violence getting out of hand.

Cuchillo told Carranza that everything had changed and that he was the only one to rule the south of Colombia.

The attack is considered Cuchillo’s way of showing he wants the emerald czar out of his territory and increase and expand his paramilitary control.
