Energy shortage on Colombia’s Caribbean coast will last weeks

Hundreds of thousands of people suffering critical energy shortages on Colombia’s Atlantic Coast have been told electricity rationing will last at least seven days, and gas service will take two to three weeks to restore.

Gas company Promigas said it had enough fuel for the region, despite a pipeline being closed after a strong river current left it exposed. But it would take two to three weeks for service to be fully normalized, it said.

Antonio Rodriguez, a manager for electricity company Electricaribe in Bolivar, one of the affected departments, said rationing imposed two days ago would last at least another week.

At least 300,000 people have been affected by the closure of the gas pipeline, which supplies major electricity plants in the region.
