Criminals released due to inefficient prison system

Failures of Colombia’s prison authority INPEC have led to the untimely release of more than 60 dangerous criminals and paralyzed investigation on paramilitary crimes, newspaper El Heraldo reported Thursday.

It appears that the criminals, including assasins and extortionists, have ended up being released due to the expiry of their terms of incarceration – inefficiency on the part of INPEC and the criminal justice system in Colombia – the newspaper said.

This impression has been voiced by innumberable court officials who have in addition forged complaints about failing security surrounding the processes that involve the confessions of paramilitaries.

Colombia’s Inspector General’s Office has also questioned the proficiency of the prison authorities and has requested that an investigation be opened into the reasons for various failures.

On Thursday morning, INPEC is expected to present former paramilitary chief Juancho Dique to face continuing charges for his implication in the massacres of El Salado, Cheng and Macayepo.
