Court rejects bullfighting ban

Colombia’s Constitutional Court on Monday ruled against the prohibition of bull and cockfighting.

Animal rights activists asked the court to prohibit the spectacle on the grounds of its cruelty.

The court agreed that cock and bullfighting are cruel, and prohibited the organization of such events where they are not traditional, but voted six against three against a complete ban of the controversial spectacle.

According to court Vice President Juan Carlos Henao, the Constitutional Court hopes that the fights will at some point no longer be organized, and is in favor of campaigns that aim to discourage them, but considered both bull and cockfighting too much a part of Colombian tradition to be banned.
