Councilor assassinated in southern Colombia

Hit men on Saturday killed a councilor from the south eastern Colombian town of Trujillo while he attended a family event.

Colonel Nelson Aceros, police commander for the department of Valle del Cauca, where Trujillo is located, told reporters that councilor Nolberto Garcia Quinceno, 57, was killed by gunshots, along with a woman identified as Aura Quinchia.

According to sources four hit men arrived on motorcycles and killed the two people on Saturday night while they attended a family event in the village of Venecia, located some 20 minutes outside Truijillo.

Aceros said that the attack could have been carried out for reasons involving other guests at the family reunion, possibly against Quinchia’s husband, who had recently arrived from Cali to attend the party.

“If the attack had been directed against the councilor they would have killed him somewhere else, because he was travelling alone,” added Aceros, in a report by EFE Monday.

The president of Trujillo town council voiced his surprise, since, according to him, Garcia Quincero had never expressed any concerns for his own safety.

“We cannot explain what has happened, since he was very quiet, very peaceful and conciliatory in the corporation,” concluded the president.
