Council candidate murdered in north Colombia

Gunmen have assassinated a candidate in local council elections in north Colombia, officials reported on Wednesday.

According to witnesses, Elizabeth Mendoza Parada, a candidate for the Liberal party in Chinácota in Norte de Santander, seemed to be waiting for someone at a gas station when she was gunned down by two men riding a motorcycle.

The 30-year-old is the second candidate in the region to be murdered recently, after Angel Miguel Salazar was killed in the department of Santander last Tuesday.

Country-wide, more than 25 candidates for October’s local elections have been killed so far this year.
