Cortes victorious in Vuelta a Colombia

by Jonathan Roorda June 8, 2009

Colombia news - Vuelta a Colombia

The second stage of this year’s Vuelta a Colombia was won by Alejandro
Ivan Cortes. The Indeportes Antióquia rider had the best legs in the
final sprint.

On day three of the 15-day race, the peloton left the capital city area with a 185km stage from Mosquera to Ibagué, in Tolima.

The course went mostly downhill, allowing sprinters to gain energy for the finale in Ibagué. At the finish, Alejandro Cortes was first to cross the line ahead of Une rider Oscar Alvarez and teammate Juan Suarez.

Juan Garcia of GW Shimano, who won the first stage on Sunday, maintains his lead in the general classification with a 23-seconds advantage over Jefferson Vargas.

On Tuesday, the riders face several climbs during the third stage from Ibagué to Alto la Linea.
