Correa wants former deputy Minister to clarify friendship with FARC commander

Ecuador President Rafael Correa wants his former deputy Interior
Minister José Chaúvin to clarify his friendship with slain FARC
commander ‘Raúl Reyes’.

The former official, now in jail for alleged ties to drug traffickers Jefferson and Miguel Edison, had admitted to have met his “friend” ‘Reyes’ on seven occasions. Chaúvin says the meetings were to discuss the liberation of hostages held by the guerrillas.

Correa, who claims to know nothing about these meetings, wants to know where they were held and if Chaúvin knew the FARC had a camp on Ecuadorean territory without telling the authorities.

The ‘Reyes’ camp was bombed in March 2008 by the Colombian armed forces. The FARC commander and 25 others were killed in this cross border attack.

Ecuador broke off diplomatic ties with its northern neighbor immediately after and has refused to restore them since.
