Cordoba criticizes doubts that the FARC will release hostages

Former Senator Piedad Cordoba criticized Colombian Interior Minister Vargas Lleras for his outward skepticism of the FARC’s promise to release its final ten military and police hostages, El Espectador reported Thursday.

Vargas Lleras made no attempt to hide his doubt after Cordoba announced that the FARC would release the final hostages on March 26, some of whom have been held for more than 13 years.

“We have taken many risks that even he (Vargas Lleras) would not be able to assume,” said Cordoba. “It’s very cool to say such things when sitting very comfortably,” she added.

Cordoba’s strong reaction was in response to openly doubtful comments from the Interior Minister.

Vargas Lleras had said previously, “they (the FARC) have made these same announcements so many times before, without producing the results, that one can not help being skeptical.”

“We have never been wrong,” said Cordoba after leaving a meeting with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to finalize the transfer logistics. She also reminded press of the ICRC’s critical role in bringing about the release.
