Copa Libertadores over for Colombian teams

The 2009 Copa Libertadores is over for Colombia. After América de Cali
and Independiente Medellín, Boyacá Chicó are the third and final team
to crash out of the continent’s most prestigious club tournament.

Ahead of the final round of matches, Chicó had a two-points advantage over Universidad de Chile to defend but the Tunja outfit faced an extremely difficult task away to Brazilian giants Gremio. Universidad meanwhile, played against group minnows Aurora Cochabamba of Bolivia.

In Porto Alegre, Chicó never stood a chance against a much stronger Gremio. The Brazilians scored two early goals from Souza and added a third through Léo in the 29th minute. No more goals were scored in this game, leading to a 3-0 final result.

Universidad won 1-2 in Bolivia thanks to goals from Marcos Estrada and Juan González, the latter being on 73 minutes to decide the clash. Aurora’s only goal was scored by Derlis Paredes.

Gremio finish in top in this group, with 16 points from six games. Universidad join the Brazilians in the next round with ten points, one more than Chicó. Aurora failed to collect a single point in this group phase.
