Court finds first error in re-election referendum procedure

Colombia’s Constitutional Court found the first procedural error in the re-election referendum bill: the House of Representatives forgot to correctly register one of its sessions.

In its first revision of the referendum bill on Tuesday, the Constitutional Court found that the House members forgot to give their final approval of the register of the December 17 session, in which the referendum initiative was voted.

According to newspaper El Espectador, it is likely the representatives forgot to approve the session’s register because they were very tired at the end of the long session which ended after 4:00 A.M.

The Constitutional Court is currently testing the constitutionality of the referendum on errors of procedure in its convocation and implementation.

The Electoral Council, on the other hand, announced it will decide over the legality of the fund raised to finance the collection of the necessary signatures to solicit referendum on October 7.

The referendum will ask Colombians if they want a constitutional amendment that will allow presidents to run for three consecutive terms.
