Constitutional Court approves UNASUR treaty

Colombia’s Constitutional Court approved the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) treaty, Colombian media reported.

According to the court, the treaty adheres to the Colombian Constitution.

The UNASUR treaty was approved by Congress on January 28. Obtaining the consent of the Constitutional Court was its final hurdle before ratification.

Colombia is the 10th South American country to approve the treaty, which was originally proposed by Ecuador and signed in Brazil in 2008.

According to the Colombian Ministry of the Public, the treaty “seeks to create a common regional authority, a common law and a South American citizenship under democratic and social parameters, that is written into the parameters that are unique to our social and democratic state of law.”
