Constitutional Court and State Council clash over abortion

Colombia’s Constitutional Court clashed with the country’s State Council after the latter suspended the law allowing abortions in cases of rape, life-threatening situations and severe malformation of the fetus.

In reaction to the suspension of the decree by the State Council, The Constitutional Court ratified the law, stressing that the law is law and must be obeyed.

The controversy surrounding abortion started when the high court ruled the government must improve public education of women’s rights, specifically on abortion.

Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez, a devout catholic and opponent of abortion, then asked for a suspension of the carrying out of abortions as, according to Ordoñez, there was inclarity over when a medic can refuse carrying out an abortion, even if it is within the law, on moral grounds.

Abortions in Colombia are illegal expect in cases where the mother’s life is in danger, the pregnancy is the result of rape of the fetus shows signs of serious malformation.
