Colombian Conservatives propose absolute abortion ban

Colombia’s Conservative Party has proposed a constitutional amendment that would ban abortion without exception, Caracol Radio reported Wednesday.

The amendment would alter Colombia’s 1991 constitution which currently only permits abortions in cases of rape, incest, when the fetus is significantly deformed, or when the mother’s life is in danger.

The initiative is backed by the National Conservative Directive, as well as other conservative, religious and pro-life groups. Conservatives argue that the constitutional assembly agreed to flatly ban abortion in 1991, but that it was later permitted in rare cases.

Earlier this month, the Conservatives claimed to obtain 5 million signatures for a petition that urged Congress to ban abortion in all cases. The drive against abortion has been supported by the Catholic Church.
