Congressmen work on Uribe’s 2014 re-election

Members of the pro-Uribe coalition in congress proposed a
constitutional change to allow Colombian President Álvaro Uribe to be
elected for the third time in 2014, leaving aside the possible
continuation of his presidency in 2010.

Uribe himself had signaled he prefers not to force the possibility of a 2010 re-election, because it could delay the approval of the political and judicial reforms his government proposed. The president himself had mentioned the possibility of the now proposed constitutional change.

If the coalition can unitedly find a new candidate to continue the current “Democratic Security” policy initiated by Uribe in 2002, the President announced he would step aside.

The lawmakers’ proposal will “allow the President to rest and return (in 2014) if he and the Colombian people want to.”
