Congress may change text referendum: Attorney General

Colombia’s Congress may change the text of the referendum demanding the
possibility for President Uribe to be re-elected, as long as they don’t
change the core of it, Attorney General Edgardo Maya Villazón said.

The referendum held earlier this year was to demand a 2010 re-election of the president, but can only serve for a 2014 re-election because it was wrongly formulated. Colombia’s House of Representatives twice turned down changing the text so Uribe could run again in 2010.

“The text isn’t untouchable but the fundamental core of the project as it is must be conserved,” Maya Villazón said Thursday without explicitly saying if the change needed to enable a 2010 re-election is part of this “fundamental core” or not.
