Comptroller General to investigate agricultural subsidies to beauty queens

Colombia’s Comptroller General’s Office is investigating if 9 billion pesos of federal agriculture subsidy illegally was given to former beauty queens and families of politicians.

According to Comptroller general Julio Cesar Turbay, his office opened and investigations against (former) high officials of the country’s Agriculture Ministry to see if they ignored regulations when granting the subsidies.

A large part of the money, intended to “promote productivity and competition and reduce inequality,” ended up in the pockets of wealthy families, family members of politicians and two former beauty queens, mostlly for “irrigation and drainage” projects, weekly Cambio reported last week.
