Colombia’s VP investigated for alleged FARC ties

Prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation against Colombia’s vice-president who has been accused of having had ties to guerrilla group FARC, the prosecutor general confirmed Thursday.

Vice President Angelino Garzon allegedly took part in a meeting that gathered fighters of the FARC’s 30th Front in February 2002, in the municipality of Dagua, Valle de Cauca.

According to a demobilized guerrillero, Diego Hernandez Trejos, Garzon met with three leaders of the Marxist guerrilla organization. Trejos stated that during the meeting, the FARC received over 160 million pesos.

The Prosecutor General, Viviane Morales, confirmed the investigation on national radio, although she insisted it was only preliminary – and required additional evidence to go further.
