Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo advances to 3rd round of Shanghai Masters

Colombian tennis star Santiago Giraldo defeated Austrian Jurgen Melzer in the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday to advance to the final 16.

Giraldo, currently ranked 48th in the world, upset 20th ranked Melzer, who was the clear favorite to progress, in three nail-biting sets.

The Colombian gave up the first set 4-6, before returning the score 6-4 in the second and finishing by winning a final set tie-breaker 7-6 (5). The match lasted two hours and 23 minutes.

Giraldo won his first match against Bosnian Ivan Dodig. After getting crushed in the first set 1-6, he came back and won 6-3 and 6-4.

He will have to beat Japanese Kei Nishikori on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals.
