Colombia’s prison director to resign

The Director Colombia’s prison authority said Tuesday he will resign amid turmoil and overcrowding in the prison system.

Colombian radio station La W reported that

Justice minister Ruth Stella Correa will have to decide on a replacement within the coming days.

INPEC has faced criticism recently over the apparent overcrowding of 142 prisons in Colombia, sometimes reaching up to 400% over their maximum capacity.

The institution also faced embarrassment over news that two ex prisoners en route to a court hearing used INPEC transport to visit relatives in a nearby town.
