Colombia’s interim prosecutor general sworn in

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos swore in interim Prosecutor General Martha Lucia Zamora Tuesday, said a government press release.

Zamora took over for Viviane Morales who was removed last week over irregularities in her election to office.

Deputy Prosecutor General Wilson Alejandro Martinez was originally slated to take over, until his own resignation Tuesday morning.

During the swearing in process Santos said, “We want this process to proceed without trauma and delay, so our fundamental objectives, which are the struggle against crime and corruption, can continue efficiently.”

The president also thanked Colombia’s Supreme Court for their quick response in the matter. “I thank the Supreme Court for the speed with which they asked for the shortlist, after having accepted the resignation of Dr. Viviane,” said Santos.

The shortlist refers to the list Santos will present to the Supreme Court in order to select a permanent prosecutor general.
