Colombia’s Nevado del Ruiz volcano decreases activity

Colombia’s Geological Service said the Nevado del Ruiz volcano’s activity has decreased in the past two days, on their website Wednesday.

Last Sunday 17 Colombian municipalities in the central departments of Tolima and Caldas were put on orange alert after geologists observed increased seismic activity in the volcano. Authorities also closed the “Los Nevados” national park during a time when the reserve expects around 20,000 visitors for Colombia’s holy week.

The report said fluctuations in activity were normal during extraordinary periods like this, and stressed that alert levels remained at orange.

“The volcanic activity levels should not be confused with alert levels. The [alert levels] were established specifically for each municipality in the Nevado del Ruiz volcano influence area. […] It’s important to follow the recommendations of the National Disaster Unit.” said the report.
