Colombia’s Nairo Quintana on Monday became the second Colombian to take the top position in this year’s Vuelta d’España, one of the world’s most prestigious cycling tours.

Nairo was allowed to put on the red jersey after an impressive escape that secured his victory in the 10th stage of the Vuelta.

While his stage victory in Spain was the first, Quintana had already worn the red jersey during this Vuelta.

A day after fellow-Colombian Darwin Atapuma took the lead in the seventh stage, Quintana took over the jersey after Atapuma failed to maintain his lead in the subsequent stage.

However, one of the Colombians’ main competitors, Spain’s David de la Cruz took over the jersey in the ninth stage.

But Quintana’s outstanding performance on Monday left De la Cruz and other competitors far behind.

Alejandro Valverde, the number two in the general classification, is 57 seconds behind Quintana after more than 38 hours of racing.

Christopher Froome, who beat Quintana to win this year’s Tour de France, is third at 58 seconds.
